Together We Take Responsibility for the Ocean

Plastic pollution is one of the greatest environmental challenges of our time, and the problem is growing each year.
If we don’t take responsibility now, plastic in the ocean will become the new normal, and that’s not a future we can accept. That’s why we are organizing The Ocean Cleanup Trondheim 2025, where we bring together volunteers from across the city to clean beaches, remove waste from the seabed, and raise awareness about marine litter.
The Ocean Cleanup is built on community and collaboration.
This is not just a cleanup, it’s an opportunity to stand together and show that action works. By taking care of the nature around us, we create an engagement that lasts long after the event itself.
On May 10, the biggest environmental action since 2017 will take place in Trondheim, and we hope you’ll be a part of it.
Volunteering. Collaboration. Action.
These three words form the foundation of The Ocean Cleanup Trondheim.
It’s not the organizations, the equipment, or the logistics that carry the event, it’s the people.
Some are cleanup leaders, others lead dive teams, work at the info stand, operate cameras, or make sure we have food and transport.
What unites everyone is the willingness to show up together.

The navy blue caps marked “The Ocean Cleanup” have become a symbol of this community. A sign that you take responsibility not because you have to, but because you want to help. When you see someone wearing the cap, you see someone making this event possible.
For us, volunteering, collaboration, and action aren’t just words they’re what we live by.
A Day for Action and Sustainability
The Ocean Cleanup Trondheim 2025 starts at Solsiden at 11:00, where we gather all participants before dividing into cleanup groups.
This year, we’re doubling down on sustainability and are proud to collaborate with Thorleifs Bussreiser, who are providing a 57-seat electric bus powered by 100% renewable energy. This helps us reduce our environmental footprint while cleaning up together.
Volunteers participating in the beach cleanup at Byneset will receive free transportation with Thorleifs Bussreiser.
The bus departs promptly at 11:10, and we encourage everyone to arrive early to secure a seat.
This is a unique opportunity to contribute to a cleaner ocean in a truly climate-friendly way.

Focus on Efficiency and Innovation
At Byneset, we’ve selected specific areas especially vulnerable to marine litter.
Here, we’ll work in smaller teams to collect as much waste as possible, focusing on everything from microplastics to large objects like ropes, bottles, and fishing gear.
We are happy to announce that NTNU Ocean Club, Miljøvernforbundet, The Ukrainian Association in Trondheim, and ESN Trondheim (Erasmus Student Network) will each provide a team leader for the smaller cleanup groups at Byneset.
This ensures solid organization and effective progress throughout the day.
Søppelsekk.no has been a loyal partner for many years and plays a critical role in making The Ocean Cleanup Trondheim possible.
They provide equipment and manpower entirely free of charge and handle the waste collection from the cleanup areas.
Without their support, a cleanup of this scale would not be feasible. Their efforts allow us to focus on the cleanup itself, knowing that the waste is handled safely and efficiently.

Simultaneous Dive Cleanup at Solsiden
While the beach cleanup takes place, volunteer divers from Dykkergruppa NTNUI, Trondheim Freediving Club, and Draugen FMK will be cleaning the seabed in Dokkabassenget at Solsiden.
An exciting addition this year is the involvement of autonomous underwater drones from Vortex NTNU, which will map the seabed in real time as the divers work. This gives us entirely new possibilities for locating waste more efficiently while also providing valuable insight into sources of pollution.
The use of underwater technology is a major step forward and makes it easier to cover larger areas below the surface.
Past cleanups have revealed everything from plastic waste to bicycles and shopping carts, and with the help of this technology, we can now remove even more debris from the ocean.

Redningsselskapet – Securing the River
We’re also pleased to welcome Redningsselskapet on board this year.
They will cover the lower section of the Nidelva river, helping clean areas otherwise hard to reach.
With their boats and expertise, they can remove waste that has collected along the riverbanks and in the water itself. Their presence also adds an extra layer of safety for participants and allows us to handle unexpected situations on the water.
Their contribution is vital to ensure a thorough and safe cleanup of the Nidelva.

Visibility and Community Engagement
During The Ocean Cleanup, a dedicated stand will be set up at Solsiden where participating organizations can share brochures and raise awareness.
Hold Norge Rent will be present at the stand, increasing awareness about littering. They will also be there from the early morning to hand out gloves and trash bags to all volunteers.
Vortex NTNU will demonstrate their underwater drone during the dive operation, offering the public a rare look at the cleanup process beneath the surface.
Once the work is done, all volunteers are invited back to Solsiden for a well-earned meal.
Bror Solsiden will provide Trondheim’s best burgers: meat, vegetarian, and gluten-free.
An Event for Everyone
The Ocean Cleanup Trondheim is a community united by a common goal: to make the ocean cleaner and safer.
We want to engage as many people as possible and aim to mobilize at least 160 volunteers.
This is a day where everyone can contribute.
Whether you’re an experienced diver or simply want to help on land, you are welcome.
The most important thing is that we stand together and show that our actions matter.
Lead-Up Events and Promotion
To create awareness and energy leading up to the main event, we held a separate cleanup in Korsvika on March 22.
Photos and videos from that day will form the foundation of our social media content reels, interviews, and stories shared in the weeks leading up to May 10.

We’ll begin posting teasers shortly after the pre-cleanup, and run a countdown campaign on Instagram.
The Facebook event was launched on March 25, and posters are being distributed at Dragvoll, Gløshaugen, student villages, Samfundet, libraries, and partner locations.
Underwater Drone Tests at Korsvika
In late March, Vortex NTNU conducted a dedicated underwater mission at Korsvika to test their drones near a well-known shipwreck, a site long explored by Project Baseline Trondheim.

Dykkergruppa NTNUI joined the operation to assist with the dive logistics, and together they documented the wreck and the marine environment around it.
It was inspiring to see the collaboration between technology and fieldwork, showing how passionate students use their knowledge to protect and explore the ocean.
Why This Matters
Plastic in the ocean doesn’t disappear, it breaks down into microplastics that enter our food chain.
Every year, millions of tons of plastic end up in the world’s oceans. Without concrete action, this problem will only get worse.

The Ocean Cleanup Trondheim is about more than just removing trash.
t’s about bringing people together, building awareness, and showing that action works.
Plastic pollution won’t vanish overnight, but if we come together year after year, we can make a real difference.
Trondheim Municipality has recognized the importance of this initiative and is supporting us financially, allowing us to carry out a bigger and more effective cleanup.
In addition, we are joined by strong partners contributing resources and volunteers.
How You Can Join
You don’t need any prior experience or special gear to participate, just a desire to make a difference.
We provide gloves, bags, and all necessary cleanup equipment, and our volunteer leaders will ensure that everyone has a safe and rewarding experience.

If you want to join the beach cleanup, meet at Solsiden no later than 11:00 and take the bus to Byneset.
If you’d rather help out at Solsiden or along the Nidelva, just show up at the same place and you’ll be assigned a task.
Divers who want to help underwater must bring their own gear and ideally have experience from similar events.
When the cleanup ends, we’ll come together at Solsiden to celebrate what we’ve achieved.
The more of us there are, the greater the impact we can make.
